Japanese drum troupe combines traditional taiko drums and kinetic choreography for a high-energy performance. Towering Wadaiko drums crafted from hardwood trees and animal skins echo like a giant’s heartbeat. Smaller, more nimble drums, meanwhile, beat with the ferocity of the laypeople in that giant’s path. But it’s the tension between the two that makes every YAMATO – The Drummers of Japan performance so thrilling. Relying on their drums to sing out the Shin-on, or the pulsing force found within each living being, this troupe focuses on the heartbeat within everyone—from birth to death—and the way every beat fits within the larger rhythm of time.
