This six-week course welcomes students with past workshop experience and newcomers alike. Each week, we will examine a short piece of fiction or essay writing from authors such as Octavia Butler, Carmen Maria Machado, Ursula K. Le Guin, and Neil Gaiman, and contemplate what makes their ideas and methods successful and applicable to our own work. We will then workshop stories-in-progress by fellow workshop participants, and examine the work both on its own terms and in the larger context of the speculative fiction that has come before. Both short stories and novel excerpts within reasonable length are welcome.
